Neuropsychiatric symptoms are among the most distressing challenges faced by patients and families in hospice and palliative care settings.
This workshop equips nurses and APRNs with practical, evidence-based strategies to assess and manage common conditions—including anxiety, depression, delirium, insomnia, and terminal agitation—through thoughtful pharmacologic approaches. Participants will deepen their understanding of symptom pathophysiology, differentiating overlapping presentations, and selecting appropriate medications tailored to the unique needs of seriously ill patients. Emphasis will be placed on safe prescribing, dose titration, minimizing adverse effects, and aligning treatment decisions with patient goals of care.
Through case-based discussion and scenarios, attendees will gain confidence in managing complex neuropsychiatric symptoms, improving patient comfort, and supporting families during progressive stages of serious illness.

Max is a palliative care clinical pharmacy specialist at The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital. He is a graduate of the Doctor of Pharmacy program at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. After graduating pharmacy school, Max went on to complete a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Indiana University Health – Academic Health Center in Indianapolis, Indiana and a PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Pain Management and Palliative Care at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. While completing his pharmacy education, Max earned a Master of Arts in Bioethics from The Ohio State University.
Max is an active member of the Society of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacists and is professionally interested in pain and symptom management, medical cannabis, and harm reduction practices for patients struggling with substance abuse and pain.
Continuing Education
Attendees can earn up to a maximum of 2.0 nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) contact hours and 2.0 Pharmacotherapeutic contact hours upon successful completion of this course. Successful completion requires participants to remain engaged throughout the Zoom platform (e.g., cameras on, engaged in breakout sessions, etc.), and completing/submitting the post-activity evaluation within the timeframe specified. Evaluations must be completed within 30 days, by November 6th, 2026, in order to receive contact hours. Late evaluations cannot be accepted.
